The Application

This is a crucial part of the admissions decision. In most cases it is the only direct communication you will have with the school to which you are applying. A well-written, pertinent application can greatly improve your chances for admission.

Important things to do when filing an application:

• Read through all material and follow directions exactly.
• Know when the deadlines for submission are and how schools review applications. Some schools accept people on a continual basis in which case it would help to get your application in early. Others wait for all applications to be received before they make final decisions.
• Write a rough draft first
• Make sure the copy you send out is neat, and all parts are completed. Needless to say, everything should be spelled correctly and be grammatically correct!

The Essay

This is also a crucial part of the admissions process. It is the students chance to convey to the college what is most important to them. Here are a few tips for writing your essay.

• The essay should be honest and accurate.
• You should try to characterize yourself through your stories to have some sort of distinguished redeeming trait.
• Go through at least two drafts before you finalize your essay.
• Have your parents or a teacher look over your essay to get corrections and opinions.
• Length is not as important as clarity.

Letters of Recommendation

Most colleges require two letters of recommendation. Make sure you choose someone who knows you well and who you have exhibited your best qualities around.

• Provide a self addressed stamped envelope when requesting a recommendation.
• Make sure you give plenty of time for them to get back to you before your application deadline.
• Make sure everyone is clear on the required format for the letters (if there is one).
